Mazunte is the perfect destination on the Oaxacan Coast for those looking for a chilled, layed back beach vibe. Think; Cabaña style accomodation, cute little juice bars and an endless coast of beautiful beaches. If you want to chill out and relax for a while this is the place to do it.
Where to stay:
El Agujon is the place to stay! They are located on the main strip of Mazunte about 50 metres back from the beach on your right hand side. They offer basic, family run cabañas at a very reasonable price. Ask to see the rooms up the top. The walk up the hill can be a killer in the midday heat but the view from the top is more than worth the struggle.
What to do:
Mazunte is located just a short Collectivo ride from the nearby towns of ‘San Augustinillo’ and the nudist/hippie beach of ‘Zipolite’ so a day trip to both of these places is something you should definitely do. Although I think the beach at Mazunte is the best for swimming.
You can walk from Mazunte to a beach called ‘Playa Mermijita’ which is only a 15 minute walk from the main strip…and there’s never any people there!
Close to here is also a hike around a jutted out headland called ‘Punta Cometa’ This is THE spot to be for sunset. Take a little backpack with some beers and snacks and post up on the headland and watch the sky do its thing! The hike is also worth doing in the early morning for some exercise.
Where to eat:
The further back from the beach you go, the cheaper the food gets.
I would reccomend having a daily juice at the juice bar, on the main strip back out to the main road, called TIBURON. They have a huge selection of delicious smoothies and juices at a very cheap price!
Right next door to Tiburon is LA BAGUETTE which has all the baked goods one could possibly need as well as fresh sandwiches for as little as 30 pesos – the perfect beach lunch.
Out on the main road there are plenty of local digs serving up tasty (and stupidly cheap) tacos and tlyudas to satisfy your Mexican Cravings.
How to get there:
If you’re coming from Puerto Escondido, go to the us terminal and jump on the SUR bus heading to Huatulco. Ask the driver to leave you at the entrance to Mazunte and from here you can jump in a taxi or a collectivo to the beach! Easy peasy!
