What is Tikal?
Tikal is the LARGEST set of Ancient Ruins in the Mayan Civilisation and a popular tourist destination for all those visiting Guatemala.
Where is Tikal?
Tikal is located on the Eastern side of Guatemala close to the town of Flores. The ruins are surrounded by luscious, green jungle. It’s one of the prettiest backdrops for a set of ruins I have ever seen AND I’ve seen a lot.
How do I get there?
The best place to base yourself to visit the Tikal Ruins, is Flores. Flores is a tiny island, accessible by a one bridge in and out. There are delicious restaurants on the water, night markets for cheap food options and handicraft stalls if you need to do a bit of souvenir shopping.
Where should I stay?
There’s plenty of good options for accommodation in Flores.
If you’re after a hostel vibe, check out Los Amigos Hostel. The hostel has an awesome restaurant out the back and a travel agency inside that offers the cheapest deals on shuttle transfers and tours!
There are also some inexpensive hotel options for those wanting a bit more privacy. Check out Hotel Aurora if you need a cheap option!
How long will I need to visit the ruins?
You can visit Tikal easily on a half day tour from Flores. You can go at any time of the day but the best time to go and explore the ruins is Sunrise or Sunset. You can climb over majority of the ruins in Tikal and one of the spots is perfect to watch the sun do it’s magic!
What will it cost me?
If you organise your tour through Los Amigo’s hostel this is where you will find the best price in town. You can check out their tours and prices HERE <<
Why should Tikal be on my Bucket List?
If you are going to visit one set of ruins in Central America make sure it’s these ones. The sheer size of Tikal is overwhelmingly awesome….you won’t want to miss it!
